Research Scientist / Project Manager

Karna is seeking a Research Scientist/Team Lead for ongoing work with a public health office within the Department of Defense in Alexandria, VA. The candidate will focus on the areas of leadership, team building, people management and development, task order and resource allocation, and contribute to multi-functional program activities. The candidate will also provide substantive program consultation, evaluation, guidance, assistance and is responsible for carrying out and promoting significant public health program activities with relative independence.



  • Serve as mentor and point of contact for team members to escalate, coordinate, and resolve issues, participates in goal-setting, drafts and delivers team member performance evaluations.
  • Serve as Karna’s onsite point of contact to the Customer. Interacts with client and/or subcontractors to understand project requirements, timelines, resources available, and existing assets to leverage.
  • Collaborate with Sr. Management on the strategies and productivity of the project team.
  • Manage the day-to-day work on the project through delegation to technical team. Assigns tasks to team members, monitors project progress, ensures quality of team's work and on-time completion, and reports to customer and Karna Sr. Program Manager.
  • Collaborate with the customer and internal/external stakeholders to ensure client-satisfaction regarding project goals and objectives and strategic initiatives.
  • Conduct research activities (extensive technical and literature reviews), write and edit reports, white papers, briefing requests, short-fuse requests and other documents, and create presentations for DSPO leadership.
  • Provide expertise and services on suicide prevention research-related issues, provide guidance on data management, analysis, and interpretation. Provide experience-based, actionable recommendations and research direction as requested on other studies being conducted by, or on the behalf of, DSPO.
  • Interpret the results of quantitative and qualitative analysis to improve the effectiveness of the programmatic and administrative operations. Interpret, display, and present data in a clear and concise manner.
  • Identify ways to streamline the process and increase efficiency in gathering and using performance information.
  • Demonstrated experience for oral and written communications with all levels of management for planning and control of project tasks. Interfaces with DoD leadership personnel, DoD contracts staff, and other cognizant DoD officials. 
  • Capable of meeting in conference with DoD technical managers and stating problems in a form capable of being solved.
  • Responsible for formulating and enforcing work standards, assigning contractor schedules, reviewing work discrepancies, supervising contractor personnel and communicating policies, purposes, and goals of the organization to subordinates.
  • Provide status and monthly reports regarding the tracking and presentation of project deliverables.


  • Master's degree required, PhD in Public Health or a related behavioral science field preferred.
  • Minimum ten (10) years’ experience
  • 5 + years technical and project management experience, including planning, organizing, staffing, reporting, coordinating, and directing all aspects of a project.
  • 5 + years of direct supervisory people management responsibility in a project setting.
  • 5 + years’ post-education experience as a team member of public health or scientific research projects.
  • Knowledge of analytical and evaluative techniques to identify, consider and resolve issues or problems.
  • Superior oral and written communications skills, capable of translating and presenting complex technical and project management concepts to management and customers, through presentations and other written formats.
  • Experience in SPSS, SAS, and/or R.
  • Familiarity with DoD policies, procedures, and culture.
  • Ability to respond effectively to changing events and competing priorities.
  • Well-versed in Microsoft Office products, specifically in Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to multi-task and re-prioritize to meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Presently or previously held a CAC or PIV ready status prior to reporting for work.
  • Obtain/maintain a favorable FBI National Criminal History Check (fingerprint check), two forms of identity proofed identification (I-9 document), and submit a National Agency Check and Law Credit (NACLAC II) vetting package for processing.
