Karna is seeking a full-time temporary Health Services Researcher (mid-level) to support The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), Division of Health Care Statistics, Ambulatory and Hospital Care Statistics Branch, located in Hyattsville, Maryland.

As the nation’s principal health statistics agency, NCHS’ mission is to compile and publish accurate, relevant, and timely statistical information to guide actions and policies that improve the health of the American people. The Ambulatory and Hospital Care Statistics Branch conducts nationally representative surveys of hospital inpatient, emergency, and outpatient departments; ambulatory surgery centers; and office-based physicians. These surveys collect data about clinicians and organizations, and their patients, and about management of patients’ conditions. Policymakers and researchers use these data to analyze patterns in management of specific conditions, quality of care and disparities among populations, and the effects of policy change. The Health Service Researcher will be a member of the Dissemination Team, which is responsible for disseminating information by creating public use files (PUFs) and publishing government reports and other publications.

    • Perform operational and statistical tasks critical for the hospital and ambulatory care surveys, which includes developing editing and quality control procedures, conducting confidentiality reviews, performing complex statistical analyses, and ensuring that data file production procedures are technically rigorous and reflect up-to-date methodology.
    • Prepare both public use files with associated documentation as well as files for the NCHS Research Data Center.
    • Work on statistical issues and performing special tabulations on issues of concern in processing electronic health records (EHR) data, including data quality and linkage issues.
    • Respond to internal and external data requests for hospital and ambulatory data.
    • Conduct health services research.
    • Write manuscripts and reports for publication by NCHS and professional journals.

    • MPH or MS in social science or health field.
    • A minimum of 5 years of related experience.
    • Strong analytical, writing, and interpersonal skills are essential.
    • Experience working with data from national surveys strongly preferred.
    • Skill in using SAS, STATA or SUDAAN is required.
    • Experience with data visualizations and software such as Tableau is highly desirable.
    • Ability to work both independently and in support of a multidisciplinary team.
    • Ability to plan, organize and execute multiple tasks simultaneously.
    • Ability to obtain and maintain appropriate security clearance.
