  • Overview

    Karna is seeking a Research Scientist/Team Lead for ongoing work with the Defense Suicide Prevention Office (DSPO) in Alexandria, VA. The candidate will focus on the areas of leadership, team building, people management and development, task order and resource allocation, and contribute to multi-functional program activities. The candidate will also provide substantive program consultation, evaluation, guidance, and assistance and is responsible for carrying out and promoting significant public health program activities with relative independence.



    • Serve as Karna’s onsite point of contact for team members and the Customer. Interact with customer and/or subcontractors to understand project requirements, timelines, resources available, and existing assets to leverage.

    Manage day-to-day work on the project through delegation of tasks from technical leads. Assign tasks to team members, monitor project progress, ensure quality of team's work and on-time completion, and report to customer and Karna Sr. Program Manager.

    • Define roles for each team member based on team members’ interests and capabilities; leverage understanding of roles to assign quick-turn, ad hoc tasks.

    • Collaborate with and solicit initial and ongoing preferences from the customer and internal/external stakeholders to ensure client-satisfaction regarding project goals, objectives, and strategic initiatives. 

    • Responsible for formulating and enforcing work standards, assigning contractor schedules, reviewing work discrepancies, supervising contractor personnel and communicating policies, purposes, and goals of the organization to subordinates.

    • Maintain a master project schedule of actions and milestones for ongoing tasks. Offer proactive updates on planned and ad hoc tasks.

    • Develop project plans and make adjustments to plans when unanticipated needs or demands emerge.

     Provide specific and constructive performance feedback to ensure team members remain motivated and meet client performance expectations. 

    • Provide program support services by facilitating multiple, concurrent tasks, briefing requests, and short-fuse requests from Department of Defense leadership.

    • Conduct research activities (extensive technical and literature reviews), write and edit reports, white papers, and other documents, and create presentations for DSPO leadership.
    • Review project reports and findings. Review applications, data sets, and models for anomalies to ensure accuracy.
    • Identify ways to streamline the process and increase efficiency in gathering and using performance information.
    • Provide continuing assessment of the validity and appropriateness of evidence based suicide prevention research.
    • Contribute to and support DSPO in compiling quarterly and annual program reports.
    • Provide status and monthly reports regarding the tracking and presentation of project deliverables.


    • Masters Degree required, PhD in Public Health or a related behavioral science field preferred 
    • Minimum ten (10) years experience.
    • 5 + years technical and project management experience, including planning, organizing, staffing, reporting, coordinating, and directing all aspects of a project.
    • 5 + years’ post-education experience as a team member of public health or scientific research projects.
    • Familiarity with governmental agency policies, procedures, and culture. Experience managing projects for policy offices (especially DoD or public health agencies)

    • Knowledge of public health and social science approaches to preventing problem behaviors. Experience in Suicidology or other behavioral health discipline preferred. 
    • Knowledge of analytical and evaluative techniques to identify, consider, and resolve issues or problems.
    • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
    • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills. Strong client management skills.

    • Ability to respond effectively to changing events and competing priorities
    • Well-versed in Microsoft Office products, specifically in Excel and PowerPoint. 
    • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities. 
    • Ability to multi-task and re-prioritize to meet deadlines. 

    Other Requirements: 
    • U.S. Citizenship.
    • Presently or previously held a CAC or PIV ready status prior to reporting for work.
    • Obtain/maintain a favorable FBI National Criminal History Check (fingerprint check), two forms of identity proofed identification (I-9 document), and submit a National Agency Check and Law Credit (NACLAC II) vetting package for processing.
